Expedition Parka

On this 12-day ultimate Antarctica cruise, we explore the Great White Continent's magnificent landscapes, glacial mountains, and incredible wildlife. This adventure is unique since we have NO SET ITINERARY, which makes this a true exploration voyage. As our voyage begins, we pilot through the calm, gunmetal grey waters and sloping glaciers of Beagle Channel. Turning southward, our journey begins in earnest, and we enter Drake Passage. A body of water that marks the intersection of the cold Antarctic with the warmer Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Drake Passage is known for rollicking conditions and strong westerly winds, called the Roaring Fifties. While this passage may be challenging, you can rest confidently aboard our expedition vessel, Ocean Victory/Albatros, which is purpose-built with stabilizers, powerful engines, and the patented reclining bow, which ensures stability and comfort in rough sea as well as having very low fuel consumption. The most spirited sailors consider Drake Passage a lifetime achievement, and you will complete the crossing twice!

In the Drake, the excitement builds as Antarctic wildlife comes into view. These nutrient rich waters lure a wealth of seabirds, albatrosses, and several species of whales. Weather permitting, we catch our first sight of seals and penguins!

With wide eyes, we will weave through the South Shetland Islands, a shimmering necklace of glistering, ice-covered islands and dormant volcanoes. Numerous Zodiac excursions are landfalls are likely. We are constantly on the lookout for whales, sea lions, elephant seals and an unbelievable amount of sea birds and penguins.

Continuing onward, we enjoy the calming silence and alluring beauty of the Antarctic mainland during hikes and Zodiac excursions. From here there is no set plan, our captain and expedition leader will look at ice charts and weather reports and explore our options. This could be the mighty tabular icebergs of the Weddell Sea, the seldomly visited lands south of the Antarctic circle or manned research stations in the most isolated places on earth. One thing is for sure we will see fantastic wildlife and real adventure.

Dense pack ice forbids many ordinary vessels from reach the far south, but with a high ice-class rating, Ocean Victory/Albatros moves swiftly carrying us on an adventure for life.

Note: The Ultimate Antarctica Experience has two different subtitles that are designed to give us an inkling of where these "no set itinerary" expeditions will go.

For the trips beginning in November it is: Peninsula in depth, as we will explore the snowy landscapes and witness the penguins mating, nest building and courtships. Unbelievable ice formations and huge ice blocks dot the scenery. The last sunsets of the season occur, which are truly majestic.

The trips that begin in DEC-FEB are called: Quest for the Circle, as we intend to go more south and if possible cross the Antarctic Circle at 66°33′, enjoy longer days with sunlight and even more active penguin rookeries and explore exciting places made possible as the breaking sea ice opens up new avenues.

February 2023

We cruised to Antarctica on board Ocean Victory at the end of January 2023. The cruise was a fantastic experience. The landscape of Antarctica are mind-blowing, literally out of this world. We had a variety of weather, but even bad weather did not deter from enjoying the experience. We did see all the expected fauna, though not in large quantities ( for this I understand it is better to go to South Georgia). But it is really the landscape that makes this worth it. The ship was great, very luxurious and comfortable, service was excellent. The expedition team were outstanding, they really made a big difference. Thanks to Polartours for proposing the cruise, getting us a good price, and generally dealing with everything in a friendly and professional manner !

So many once in a life-time moments. I loved the wildlife encounters. Tens of thousands of penguins on the beach. Interactions of penguins and fur seal pups. Amazing to watch a leopard seal hunt and catch a penguin. Who knew that icebergs could be so amazing and fascinating. (Copied from Swoop Antarctica)

It is a very comfortable well appointed ship and thankfully very stable. I did have a problem with my cabin when after two days there was a loud, metallic banging noise which seemd to be from above and outside the porthole. I asked to be moved when it didnt get fixed and I went up from deck 3 to 4 and a very nice cabin with a window. Lucky me! The food was very good too. My only complaint was the lack of hot plates & often the 'hot' food was cold too, for breakfast/lunch up in the deck 8 restaurant. (Copied from Swoop Antarctica)

Well Antarctica was impressive with all its splendor.. it’s vastness, whiteness. And for a few of the coves we were able to get in. But South Georgia.. was the highlight with so much wildlife and the history. The museum in Grytviken and the church were also very interesting. All the penguins - thousands of them at a time was very overwhelming at times. And Malvinas was good to as we learned more about its history. (Copied from Swoop Antarctica)
