What is the Forest Guardian project?

[Forest Guardians]( www.theforestguardians.org) is an initiative of the V Social Foundation launched in 2024 to support long-term rainforest conservation through Indigenous-led community stewardship in the Ecuadorian Amazon. A fixed share of Ventura TRAVEL’s annual travel revenue contributes to the rainforest project Forest Guardians.

The conservation project is implemented in partnership with the Kichwa community Sinchi Warmi in Ecuadors Amazon rainforest. . Its long-term goal is to transfer ownership of 36 hectares of rainforest to the Kichwa community organization Sinchi Warmi as community territory, while complying with environmental protection criteria.

Until the ownership transfer is completed, we are working together over a five-year period to support the protection and strengthening of the existing secondary forest and the more than 200 recorded animal and plant species it hosts. This includes reforestation of degraded areas, regeneration measures in order to improve ecological health and increase biodiversity, while empowering the community for the long-term management of the protected area.

Long-term conservation is only possible if it also provides sustainable livelihoods for the community. The project therefore supports  community-based tourism, local products, and educational activities that generate local income while protecting the forest. The aim is to enable the 24 community members to dedicate time and resources to long-term forest stewardship.

Knowledge transfer between generations within the community is also an important part of the project. This is intended to help maintain the community’s connection to nature among future generations and support the long-term practice of forest protection.

After completing your booking, you will receive an invoice from your travel specialist by email. A deposit of 30% of the trip price is required to secure your booking. Payment can be made through bank transfer or by credit card through a secure payment link.

Full payment is expected 30 days before your trip. Payment can be made in installments.

How do I get my luggage on board, whats the boarding process?

The exact boarding process of your expedition cruise will vary from operator to operator. Once you have booked a cruise, we will send you a briefing from your ship, detailing all the steps. If you have chosen a ship-based expedition cruise (in contrast to Air Cruise, where youre being flown into the destination) , then typically you can drop off your luggage on the first day, and the crew of the ship will take care of transporting your luggage to the ship, and will even place it in your cabin for you.

An Indigenous Guard regularly patrols the territory to help detect and discourage illegal logging and hunting, documenting activities and reinforcing collective responsibility. Ecological progress is supported through a forest enrichment plan that reintroduces native tree species important for wildlife and canopy recovery. Progress is measured through the survival of planted trees, the regeneration of native vegetation, and long-term monitoring of wildlife using camera traps and field surveys, helping the community track the health of the forest and the species it supports. We also track implementation of the community’s Forest Management and Annual Operational Plan (POA), documenting conservation and capacity-building activities. Involving younger members in monitoring and restoration supports that knowledge and stewardship continue across generations, supporting long-term local management of the protected forest area.

What activities can I expect on a Polar Cruise?

All cruises in the polar regions operate to itineraries that are more-or-less fixed. We say more or less, because wildlife (breeding, seasonality) and weather always play an important role in routing. Most cruises will offer a range of land-based and water-based activities that you will enjoy at various points in your cruise, including:

- Land excursions (including hiking trails, visitor centers, time relaxing on beaches, observing animals, etc.)
- Bird Watching
- Snorkeling (from ship or beaches)
- Dinghy rides
- Kayaking
- Diving (on ships with diving itineraries)
- Naturalist presentations. These usually take place every evening - on board the bigger ships also with help of projectors, microscopes etc.

All boats carry English speaking, scientifically trained guides. They will lead you on your excursions, allowing you to learn as much as possible about the unique wildlife and habitats of the Polar Regions.

We oftentimes get asked about visa, insurances and entry fees for Polar Expedition Cruises.

**Passports:** Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months validity beyond your return date. Your passport details are crucial for trip preparations, and accuracy is key—make sure your booking information matches your passport exactly. For peace of mind, carry a copy of your passports photo page and leave another copy with trusted contacts at home.

**Visas:** When embarking on Polar Expedition Cruises, departure usually occurs from countries like Chile or Argentina for Antarctica, and from Denmark, Iceland, Canada, etc., for the Arctic. What can i do to avoid seasickness?

If you are prone to motion sickness then here are a few hints to help you.

Firstly, book a cabin in the middle of the ship. The middle of the ship will move less, both in roll and in pitch.
Secondly, chose a larger ship. Bigger vessels typically are more stable, and some of them are even equipped with stabilizers, fins under water that remove the rolling in the swells.
Thirdly, take medical advice on anti-seasickness medication. Some traditional remedies are said to be very effective, such as taking ginger or using commercially-available acupressure wristbands.

What is a fuel surcharge?

Global oil prices are extremely unpredictable. With that in mind, ship operators who operate in the polar regions are at liberty to implement a fuel surcharge as they see fit. In addition to the fuel pricing changes, all vessels visiting Antarctica are required to use much higher-grade and expensive fuel under the terms of the Antarctic Treaty.

While the charge itself will depend on the ship and duration of the cruise, it is possible that a surchage will be added to your final invoice. If this is the case, you will receive a formal e-mail from your travel specialist with an explanation and your new cruise total added to your final invoice.

What is a typical day on Polar expedition cruise?

There’s really no such thing as a typical day in the polar regions. Individual landing locations are different for every trip due to weather, ice, currents, and light conditions. The possible wildlife sightings also heavily depend on the time of the season, which can also affect the tentative itinerary. We ask all travelers to be open-minded and flexible when it comes to activities available on expedition cruises.

Below is an example for a day with two landings, but please be aware that
every day is different — if the weather is poor then there may be no landings and sometimes there can be as many as four landings achieved in a single day.

- Warm Socks — Lots of them. Merino/Smartwool is recommended for durability, warmth, and long-term value.

- High Factor Sunscreen — The ozone layer is at its thinnest above the polar regions, and theres significant glare from the white snow and ice. This is a must.

##Advice
Do not bring travelers checks, notify your bank that you will be traveling, and if advised start seasickness medication before sailing. The worlds northernmost church is peaceful, welcoming and offers beautiful views over the valley. Like many buildings in Longyearbyen, youll be asked to remove your shoes before entering.

About a 25-minute walk from the town centre, Nybyen is the oldest part of Longyearbyen. Here youll find:

**🦌 Look for Svalbard Reindeer**
You dont have to leave town to see wildlife. During my stay I regularly saw reindeer grazing beside the road and between the colourful houses.

Longyearbyen began as a coal mining town, and reminders of its past are everywhere. Look out for the old cableway towers stretching across the mountainsides—they once transported coal from the mines to the harbour.

What to wear on your Polar Expedition Cruise?

When is the best time to book?

An expedition cruise to Antarctica or the Arctic is a big deal! Most people plan for this type of trip at least 8 months in advance. This means the earlier you book, the better chance youll have to reserve your prefered cabins. Early bird discounts are also popular and a great way to get 10-30% off your cruise.

Most expedition cruises offer optional activities like camping and kayaking, but the spaces are limited. A cruise with 120 passengers can have only 10-15 spaces for kayaking. These are reserved on a first come first served basis. The earlier you book, the higher your chance of grabbing a spot.

A Polar expedition is one of the most singular travel experiences you could ever have. Its isolated location comes with a unique set of health-and-safety-related requirements. Besides it being mandatory to be reasonably fit, here is what you must know about insurances for your trip:

- **Mandatory for all Polar Trips: Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Insurance.** Polar regions are remote and challenging to access in case of a medical emergency. For this reason, all Polar tour operators require travel insurance that covers emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. Without this coverage, you will not be allowed to board.

- For Antarctica, most operators require coverage between $100,000 and $500,000.

- In the Arctic, the required coverage ranges from $100,000 to $200,000.
