Few Antarctic routes give the expedition team this much time to keep going south. After a night in Ushuaia, Discoverer crosses the Drake Passage and enters the western Antarctic Peninsula for five flexible days of Zodiac cruises, shore landings and wildlife watching. Paradise Bay, Cuverville Island, Damoy Point, Wilhelmina Bay and the Lemaire Channel are among the possibilities, but weather, sea ice and wildlife decide the precise plan each day.
The defining objective lies at 66°33' South. If conditions permit, the ship crosses the Antarctic Circle before turning north towards the volcanic South Shetland Islands. Gentoo and chinstrap penguins, humpback and orca whales, seals, giant petrels and albatrosses may all enter the story. This is a real expedition rather than a fixed sightseeing circuit: the route is ambitious, the landings remain flexible, and the reward is extra time in the most dramatic part of the Peninsula.

Arrive in Ushuaia, where the Andes meet the Beagle Channel at the southern edge of Tierra del Fuego. An included transfer takes you from the airport to the group hotel when the stated arrival conditions are met. The rest of the day is yours to settle in or explore the city, perhaps along the waterfront or through its maritime history. An optional evening briefing offers the first chance to meet fellow travellers and ask questions before embarkation.

The first full day at sea is an introduction to the Southern Ocean and to the expedition team who will interpret it. Lectures and briefings cover wildlife, ice, history and responsible exploration, while citizen-science activities offer a more hands-on way to engage. Spend time on deck watching for albatrosses and petrels using the strong westerly winds. The crossing is also the practical preparation for the landings and Zodiac cruises to come.

Cold Antarctic water begins to meet the warmer sub-Antarctic ocean as Discoverer crosses the Antarctic Convergence. Seabirds remain close to the ship, and the first icebergs may appear on the horizon. The expedition team uses the day to refine plans around weather, sea ice and wildlife reports, then shares the latest landing possibilities. By evening, the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula may be drawing closer.

The western Antarctic Peninsula opens with glaciers, sculpted ice and steep mountain walls rising directly from the sea. Conditions permitting, the first Zodiac cruise or shore landing brings you close to this scale in a way the ship alone cannot. The expedition team selects the strongest safe opportunity in the Gerlache Strait region, guided by weather, ice and wildlife. Penguins, seals and humpback whales may all be encountered, but no two expedition days follow the same script.

Another flexible expedition day creates room for up to two outings when conditions allow. Paradise Bay may offer a Zodiac cruise beneath ice cliffs, while Cuverville Island is known for gentoo penguins nesting against a vast mountain backdrop. A landing can involve snow, uneven ground and a wet step from the Zodiac, followed by time to watch wildlife at a respectful distance. The exact site remains the expedition leader's call, but the focus is always on the best experience available that day.

The Peninsula rewards patience with contrasts: a quiet bay can suddenly fill with the sound of a breathing whale, while an old hut reveals the human history of this remote coast. Damoy Point and Wilhelmina Bay are among the possible areas considered by the expedition team. Zodiac cruises, landings and time on deck keep the day active without fixing it to one promised site. Humpback whales are often present in these productive waters, although every encounter remains wild and unscripted.

Discoverer turns towards the narrower channels and more concentrated ice of the deep south. The Lemaire Channel, if accessible, creates one of Antarctica's most memorable passages, with dark cliffs, glaciers and ice filling the water ahead. Expedition operations continue wherever conditions offer a safe landing or Zodiac cruise. The farther south the ship reaches, the more the landscape begins to feel removed from the better-travelled Peninsula route.
%3Aformat(webp)%2F7a94fb4e-9aa0-4d6d-84c1-21c5565ae89d-day09-antarctic-circle-iceberg.jpg&w=1920&q=75)

Today carries the voyage's defining ambition: crossing 66°33' South. Weather and sea ice have the final say, so the expedition team cannot guarantee the exact point reached, but the route has been designed to make a serious attempt. Should Discoverer cross the Circle, a long polar tradition turns the moment into a celebration. Beyond the line, the immense light, sea ice and isolation make the achievement tangible long after the coordinates disappear from the screen.

The northbound route reaches the South Shetland Islands, where glaciers meet volcanic rock and large wildlife colonies thrive despite the exposed setting. Deception Island and Yankee Harbour are among the possible sites, subject to weather and expedition conditions. A Zodiac cruise or landing may reveal steaming black sand, whaling-era remains, gentoo and chinstrap penguins, fur seals and giant petrels. The day adds a darker, more volcanic face of Antarctica to the white Peninsula scenery.

Discoverer leaves the South Shetland Islands and begins the return crossing towards South America. The expedition programme continues with lectures, wildlife watching and time to compare photographs and field notes. Albatrosses and petrels may again follow the ship across the open ocean. After the intensity of the landing days, the passage gives space to understand how far south the voyage travelled and what changed along the way.

The second Drake day brings the expedition together for its closing chapter. Watch the horizon for seabirds and whales, revisit the journey through the voyage slideshow and spend a final evening with the people who shared it. The ship's course leads back towards the Beagle Channel, while the expedition team remains available for questions and conversation. A farewell dinner marks the last night aboard Discoverer.

Discoverer arrives in Ushuaia in the morning. After breakfast and disembarkation, an included group transfer is provided to the airport, the group hotel or a central Ushuaia location under the stated conditions. You can continue to Buenos Aires or stay longer in Tierra del Fuego. The expedition ends where it began, but with the Antarctic Circle, the Peninsula's wildlife and the scale of the Southern Ocean now part of your own map.
