When is the Best Months to See the Northern Lights on an Arctic Cruise?

Northern Lights

To catch the Northern Lights at their most spectacular, plan your Arctic cruise between September/October or early April. This period offers the longest nights and darkest skies, ideal for viewing the auroras.

Choose an Arctic cruise that navigates to areas with minimal light pollution and clear skies. Our Polar Experts can help you select the perfect time and route for your adventure, ensuring an unforgettable Northern Lights experience.

How do I photograph the Northern Lights?

photo workshop

Bring a camera with manual settings and a tripod. Set a long exposure time and a high ISO to capture the auroras effectively. For a bright and active aurora, use a shutter speed of 5-10 seconds. For a slower-moving aurora, extend the shutter speed to 12-20 seconds, and for a faint aurora, try 20-25 seconds.

Set your aperture (f-stop) to at least f/4 to ensure enough light for capturing the aurora. Avoid going lower than f/2.8 to prevent grainy images.

Some cruises also offer photography workshops to help you get the perfect shot. To find out which cruises offer photography workshops, ask our polar specialists!

Where to See the Northern Lights?

For an unforgettable Northern Lights experience, our cruises to Greenland and Iceland provide prime viewing opportunities:

  • Greenland: Greenland's remote and expansive landscapes offer some of the clearest skies in the Arctic, free from light pollution. Its vast ice fields and rugged terrain create a dramatic backdrop for the Aurora Borealis, enhancing the beauty of the Northern Lights.

  • Iceland: Iceland’s unique landscapes, including volcanic formations and glaciers, provide a striking contrast to the Northern Lights. The island's minimal light pollution and varied terrain make it an exceptional destination for witnessing the auroras in all their vivid colors.

Why Now is the Best Time to See the Northern Lights

The Solar Maximum, a peak period in the sun’s 11-year cycle, is marked by heightened solar activity and a surge in auroral displays.

Experts forecast that the upcoming Solar Maximum in 2024-25 will bring an exceptional frequency and brilliance to the Northern Lights, making it the most spectacular show we’ve seen in over a decade. After this, we won’t see another Solar Maximum until 2036.

You can confidently book your Northern Lights cruise, knowing we’re dedicated to enhancing your chances of experiencing this breathtaking natural phenomenon.
