What we love about the Discoverer
140 guests — personal expedition scale with proper lounges, wellness and cabin choice.
Wrap-around Deck 6 — stay with wildlife and ice as conditions change.
Refreshed in 2018 and 2023 — more comfort between active Zodiac landings.

We recommend the Discoverer to travellers who want Antarctica to feel like an expedition, but do not want their time between landings to feel basic. With 140 guests, she sits in a useful middle ground: small enough for a personal atmosphere and flexible Zodiac operations, yet large enough for proper public spaces, an elevator and a choice of outward-facing cabins. For us, that is an appealing balance for first-time Antarctica travellers and experienced polar visitors who value both access and a comfortable place to recover after a long day outside.
The ship was refurbished in 2018 and 2023, and that matters more here than a list of facilities. Cabins and public spaces feel more considered than on many classic expedition vessels of a similar generation. The panoramic Observation Lounge, Lecture Theater and wrap-around Deck 6 give you several good places to watch for wildlife, listen to the expedition team or simply stay with the view as conditions change. A sauna, steam room, fitness centre and outdoor jacuzzis are bonuses after cold, wind-exposed Zodiac landings—not the reason to choose the ship.
Discoverer remains expedition-first: Ice Class 1A, Polar Code compliance and a fleet of Zodiacs support landings and wildlife cruising in remote polar landscapes. We would put her on the shortlist for travellers who like an active day ashore and want greater comfort back on board. If your priority is the smallest possible guest count, a more intimate ship may suit you better; if you want an upgraded cabin range, strong viewing spaces and a relaxed boutique atmosphere, Discoverer is a compelling fit.

Meals are served in the ship’s restaurant, with international cuisine and a bar plus outdoor grill providing different settings between expedition activities. We like that dining is part of the social rhythm rather than a formal interruption: it is where people compare the day’s landings, wildlife sightings and photographs before the next briefing. Each cabin has a minibar and refrigerator, with soft drinks, juice and sparkling water included; the precise beverage inclusions outside the cabin can vary by itinerary, so we always confirm them with your departure.
Discoverer follows Polar Latitudes’ responsible-travel practices, which are especially relevant in the fragile polar environment. Guests receive a reusable stainless-steel water bottle and can refill it at onboard water stations; reusable dishes are used for refreshments ashore, while paper straws are supplied only on request. The operator also describes strict boot-cleaning and biosecurity procedures around landings, and states that its vessels follow IAATO and MARPOL requirements for waste, greywater and blackwater disposal. These practices do not remove the impact of polar travel, but they are concrete measures we look for when assessing an expedition operator.
