Ce qu'il faut savoir sur : South Georgia Pipits
Our Expert Says… "Another huge beneficiary of the rat eradication program on South Georgia, it's wonderful to hear the island's only songbird singing more and more each time we visit."
The South Georgia pipit is very special as it's Antarctica's only songbird. Found nowhere else except South Georgia, this sparrow-sized bird is also one of the few non-seabirds in the whole Antarctic region.
In appearance, the South Georgia pipit is unremarkable - brown coloring, about 15cm (6") long, with long legs and a short tail. It builds nests from dried grass and prefers to do so in the clumps of tussac grass that are found throughout South Georgia. It feeds on spiders and small insects, and forages among debris washed up on the beaches.
Until recently, the South Georgia Pipit was only commonly seen on offshore islands, such as Prion Island, due to the population of introduced rats on the main island of South Georgia. However, a rat eradication program was completed in 2018 which saw South Georgia become officially rat-free in 2018. Since then, the pipit is seen in increasing numbers around many of the beaches on the island.
