What to do in Longyearbyen?

I recently spent a few days here before boarding my own expedition cruise and was genuinely surprised by how much there is to do. If you have the chance, I highly recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation to explore the town. 🏛️ Visit the Svalbard Museum If you only have time for one museum, make it this one. It's the best place to learn about Svalbard's wildlife, geology, history and early explorers before heading into the Arctic.

🧭 Explore the North Pole Expedition Museum Discover the fascinating stories of the explorers who attempted to reach the North Pole by airship, ship and sled.

☕ Grab a Coffee at Husky Café One of my favourite cafés in town. During my visit there were even huskies relaxing inside while guests enjoyed coffee. Don't miss trying the Arctic Latte!

⛪ Visit Svalbard Church The world's northernmost church is peaceful, welcoming and offers beautiful views over the valley. Like many buildings in Longyearbyen, you'll be asked to remove your shoes before entering.

🏔️ Walk to Nybyen About a 25-minute walk from the town centre, Nybyen is the oldest part of Longyearbyen. Here you'll find: Coal Miners' Cabins, an art gallery, mountain views

🦌 Look for Svalbard Reindeer You don't have to leave town to see wildlife. During my stay I regularly saw reindeer grazing beside the road and between the colourful houses.

⚒️ Discover the Mining History Longyearbyen began as a coal mining town, and reminders of its past are everywhere. Look out for the old cableway towers stretching across the mountainsides—they once transported coal from the mines to the harbour.
