The Grey Glacier is a glacier in the north-west of the Torres del Paine National Park. It is 6 kilometers wide and over 30 meters high, covering a total area of 270 km², making it the biggest Glacier in the National Park. The Grey Glacier is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which is the world's second-largest contiguous ice field after those found in the poles. The massive glacier ends in the lake of the same name, Lake Grey, where its front end is divided by a big rock island. It is quite normal to see small icebergs floating on the lake due to glacier's calving. Depending on the climate, the iceberg’s color can turn from white to a rich blue, creating an almost mystic atmosphere.
the original Grey Glacier once covered all of Southern Chile and Argentina 18.000 years ago
Certain portions of the glacier visible in the image are indeed gray due to gray-brown moraines of soil and rock debris
the Southern Patagonien Ice Field has a total of 49 glaciers
