Macquarie Shag
Leucocarbo purpurascens
What you need to know about the Macquarie Shag
The Macquarie Shag is an endemic cormorant found only on Macquarie Island, a subantarctic territory of Australia. It belongs to the blue-eyed shag group and nests in colonies along rocky shores and headlands. Feeding mainly on fish and benthic invertebrates, it is a key marine predator in the island’s coastal ecosystem. Its restricted range makes it vulnerable to environmental change and human disturbance.
